This is something I have never come to grips with. And if any one of my readers can enlighten me on this matter, I would be deeply obliged.

There are several genres of music namely, pop, reggae, rock, rap, hip-hop, blues, jazz, lounge, trance, techno, house and the list just keeps going on and on….

.
.
Why do we listen to music?

I think, it is to emote. You listen to music to give your emotions a companion, to match a feeling. You actually feel like the artist I trying to tell you something through a song. Some songs literally feel like they go right through your soul. This feeling is accentuated when you are listening to a song that is actually describing a feeling you are currently subjected to or undergoing for example relaxed, angry, sad, heart broken, happy, betrayed, lucky, left out etc.
.
.

But the dodgy question is, why is a certain kind of music frowned upon?

One thing that Ive noticed over the years and still do is, Pop is frowned up on as gay music by some. You know, the Backsktreet Boys, Boyzone, Westlife and the sorts.

On the other hand, RAP, Rock, Heavy Metal, Hip Hop, Trance, Techno and all are cool. Music with the “punch & X-factor” in it. I admit, even I have, at one point of time, frowned up on certain music just to fit into a group of friends and secretly listen to the rest. But that actually made me love a whole new genre of music. So it has its pros and cons. Those were school days. As I moved on in life, I realized the true value of music and that I loved listening to all kinds of music. If anyone wants to judge me by the music I listen to, go ahead, my comment box is right below.

I had the great opportunity of meeting the lead singer of one of the leading rock bands in India. As we chatted, he asked me, “Mithun…..so what kind of music do you listen to?”. I honestly told him, “I listen to all kinds of music. Though I love Rap and Hip Hop, I wouldn’t mind any of the girl or boy bands either as long as I love the music.” I expected him to just nod and chuckle later with his friends, but he was way too mature for that. He nodded slowly, leaned forward and said, “It’s a pleasure to meet a blessed listener. I too feel the same.” Oh by the way, if you think I am shitting you, then go ahead. This actually happened.

.
.
I was shocked at such a remark and glad that this guy who goes on stage and head bangs and throats lyrics actually listens to other genres as well. Later when I got talking with him, he told me that he listens to all kinds of music and draws inspiration from their emotions, lyrics and culture. I was thrilled and humbled at the same time.

I do believe, after a certain age, artists much alter the way they showcase their music. Now a bunch of young guys or gals might attract the crowd initially. But if you are 40 plus and still want your “botoxed” cheeks and saggy chests to be termed under heart throbs, I would pass……….thats a big NO NO!!!
.
.

All I ask is, why is the music being blamed?

If you ask me what is that one music that you do not like, personally, it would be death metal because, I do not understand it. But I still feel, if I understood it and probably had emotions to compare it with, I might like it. Otherwise I love everything else. I do not know why. I listen and sing to Pop, Rock, breathe Rap, Hip Hop, lil bit of Blues, tolerate Jazz, love Trance, adore Techno, embrace House and I can keep going on.

All this makes me wonder, is music all about attitude or the art itself? And the most interesting part is that, it isn’t like, if you like a certain genre, you be left in peace. He/She is considered an outcast until he decides to fit in gradually or decides to live like an outlaw. In most of the cases, the former is the eventuality of the scenario.

So, finally is it that, “music” equals “religion” and “genre” equals “cult” or did I just manage to write a whole post about something only I feel exists? I wonder……………

Cheers!!!

Eminem’s latest album Relapse which had a soft launch on the 15th of May 2009, later officially released on the 19th May 2009, is in many ways a typical Eminem album with a song about his mom, celebrity mockery, for his daughters Hailie and Elanor. The tracks, “Crack a Bottle”, “3 AM”, “Beautiful”, “We Made You”, “Old Time’s Sake” were all top 40 hits in the U.S. Relapse debuted #1 on the U.S. albums chart, selling over 608,000 domestic copies in its first week and over 1,000,000 worldwide.

When a lot of folks purely detest the white rapper from Detroit, there is an even bigger population that follows him religiously, like myself. Why do we love him so much, what is so great about the short, white rapper that bags about his mother and disses everyone at the drop of a hat?

Personally, I am fan of his lyrics and rapping style. It isn’t just novelty rap that deals with disses. It is sheer poetry. To actually have the talent to implement thoughts in words, transfer emotion from heart to paper. Some of the greatest rappers like 2-pac & Notorious B.I.G were aces at doing this. Though they had all the talent, the art of rhyming two words that don’t even share the same spelling was only tackled by Eminem. And as far as RAP is concerned, if you could rhyme, then you had done more than half the job. But Eminem, not only could rhyme, he was also a modern day poet. All the ingredients for a legendary rapper. All you have to do is, search on the web for one of his song lyircs. Let me help you with a few songs “Cleaning Out My Closet”, “Mockingbird”, “When I’m Gone”, “Beautiful”, “Real Slim Shady”, “We Made You”, “The Way I Am”, “My Name Is”, “White America”.

I am not asking you to admire him or listen to his music or even stand him. Just spend sometime to go through his lyrics, read them, see if most of the words even rhyme, try and understand them, empathize with his emotion. Then listen to one of the above songs and the way he rhymes those weird words. It is out of the world.

For those of you who did not know what rap meant, it stands for Rhymes And Poems. It is not just obscenity, violence, anger, hatred. It can even be love, like Eminem has for his kids, anger for his mom for ruining his childhood, hatred for the world for putting him through misery. He does not even care for his fans, he has abused his fans themselves in so many songs like “The Way I Am” and still we love him. He has then thanked them later in another song “When I’m Gone”. He goes through a mixture of emotions as any human being. The only difference is that he pens it down and sings about it.

Why do we admire someone? Ever thought of that? We admire someone, when he/she has the talent or a mere capability to do something we can’t or much better than how we do it and rises to become the epitome of that. Even though a slim population listens to rap, when someone says RAP, who is it that comes to your mind, if you are not a rap lover? EMINEM. Why? It is because he is the epitome of rap. Chess – Vishwanathan Anand. It is not because Gary Kasperov is the worst, just because Anand is the best. Cricket – Sachin Tendulkar, Swimming – Michael Phelps and so on.

Like any celebrity he has had his fair share of trials and lawsuits. I can’t even count how many that man has had against him and filed against others. All said and done, when you are at the top, there are always people trying to pull you down. He has had his so called friends betray him a lot of times and embezzle money from him. To defend your position, a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

This is his era….Let him bask in its glory. He deserves every bit of it.

Cheers!!!

Michael Jackson’s sad demise on the 25th of June 2009 came as a shock to the whole world. And even before his cause of death could be confirmed, there were speculations about whether his kids were in fact his, what kind of debt he had left behind, who was on his will, how many plastic surgeries he had had. There was even one piece of news that suspected that the person that died was not Michael. Come on man, give me a break. The man has just died for Pete’s sake.

None of the speculations were something the world did not know about already. Michael’s kids with Lisa Presley. Let’s see, Michael is black, Lisa is white, the kids are white with blue eyes and blonde hair. Now if that did not make you raise your eyebrow sometime in the past 15 years, then you might keep, revisiting your biology lectures, on the cards, like the great Katt Williams pointed out
|
|
|

He is gone and we need to respect him for the person he was despite all the whacked out stuff. He is no different from Marilyn Manson when it comes to being crazy. Fact, he got extensive plastic surgery (EPS), so what? Do you want me to start naming all the peeps who got EPS done? Never mind…Then followed the accusation of child molestation. So let me get this straight, he built a multi million dollar child amusement park so he could doodle around with the kids….right!! I’ll buy that….NOT…

In one of the interviews, Lisa mentioned that long before when they were together and the topic of her father’s (Elvis Presley – for the ones who could not decipher that by now) death cropped up, Michael had said “I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did.” Weird!!!

He single-handedly created a trend revolution with his penchant for military detailing, sequin jackets and red leather in the 1980s and challenged the mainstream fashion looks of the era and an army of fans began to emulate some of his more elaborate fashion choices, often donning his trademark single rhinestone glove in tribute or pinning on military badges to their jackets. His peg-leg cropped trousers, worn with white ankle socks and black loafers were the next to create the rave throughout the young generation.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jacko was the only celebrity with the maximum number of lookalikes. He created music which very few are not aware of (this is apart from the wannabes who know what hes worth and still deny it coz its pop and they are way too cool for it)….baaarf

Anyway, he’s gone and let us remember him what he was made for and what he made best….music.

RIP Jacko…..

Cheers!!!
